Results of two sampling campaigns conducted in Kwale County Kenya in March and June 2016 by GHS/UPC as part of the Gro for GooD project (NERC grant NE/M008894/1)

Results of two sampling campaigns conducted in Kwale County Kenya in March and June 2016 by GHS/UPC as part of the Gro for GooD project. Water samples from over 79 groundwater and 6 surface water (SW) locations were analysed for major ions, stable isotopes, selected trace constituents, electrical conductivity, nitrates, ammonia, pH, DO (Dissolved Oxygen), Eh (oxidation / reduction potential), Temperature, TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and field alkalinity. Most locations were sampled in both March (dry season) and June (wet season). Geology at each location recorded as follows: P - Pliocene Sands, Pls - Pleistocene Sands, Plc - Pleistocene corals. Other constraints
The dataset has been formally approved by BGS for access by external clients under a BGS Digital Data Licence, issued via BGS's IPR Section. The dataset must not be provided to, or be accessible by, an external client until the IPR Section confirms that signed licence documentation is in place. Refer to the IPR Section (DigitalLE@bgs.ac.) if further advice is required.

Other constraints
Either: (i) the dataset is made freely available, e.g. via the Internet, for a restricted category of use (e.g. educational use only); or (ii) the dataset has not been formally approved by BGS for access and use by external clients under licence, but its use may be permitted under alternative formal arrangements; or (iii) the dataset contains 3rd party data or information obtained by BGS under terms and conditions that must be consulted in order to determine the permitted usage of the dataset. Refer to the BGS staff member responsible for the creation of the dataset if further advice is required. He / she should be familiar with the composition of the dataset, particularly with regard to 3rd party IPR contained in it, and any resultant use restrictions. This staff member should revert to the IPR Section (ipr@bgs.ac.uk ) for advice, should the position not be clear.

Statement
Three casing volumes of groundwater removed from each handpump or well prior to sampling using electric pump when water column sufficient. Temp, pH, EC25, DO, eH measured by YSI Professional Plus probe with cell flux to avoid air contact (automatic temp compensation for pH and EC25). pH calibrated against pH 7.00 and 4.04 standard solutions 3x/wk. EC25 calibrated against 1413µS/cm standard solution 3x/wk prior to fieldwork. Probes washed in distilled water before and after use; kept in distilled water. Ammonium conc.(mg/l NH4-N, mg/l NH4+) measured by field colorimeter test (colour card - Merck Millipore). Alkalinity measured in situ after filtering sample (0.2µm filters; field titration using digital tritator (Merck Millipore). Samples for cation, anion and trace element analysis filtered with 0.2µm GNWP (Millipore) nylon membrane in 15 mL polypropylene bottles (new membrane at each point). After filtering, cation and trace elements samples acidified with a few drops of 70% HNO3. Water isotopes collected in (2mL) special crystal chromatography tubes with septum cups without headspace. TOC crystal bottles muffled before sampling, filled without headspace, acidified with a few drops of HCl 2N. Samples kept at 4°C in dark coolbox then stored at 4°C until transport to lab in temp-controlled boxes. Labs: Cations, trace metals and TOC - Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA) by ICP-AES, ICP-MS and by infrared detector using the NPOC method (Shimatzu TOC-Vcsh); Anions - - Catalan Institute of Water Research (ICRA) using ionic chromatography except phosphates (analysed by spectrophotometry); Br - Grup de tècniques de separació (GTS), Autonomous University of Barcelona by ICP-MS; Environmental isotopes (dD, d18O) - Centro de Hidrogeología de la Universidad de Málaga (CEHIUMA) by Picarro equipment. Quality of chemical analysis checked by performing an ionic mass balance.
