International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) Version 4.0

The International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) Version 4.0 is a gridded continuous terrain model covering ocean and land of the Arctic region. The grid has been compiled from data covering approximately 14.2 percent of the Arctic seafloor with multibeam bathymetry and about 5.5 percent with other sources, excluding digitized depth contours. The grid-cell size (resolution) is 200x200 m on a Polar Stereographic projection, with the true scale set at a latitude of 75 deg N and a central meridian of 0 deg. The horizontal datum is WGS 84 and the vertical datum is assumed Mean Sea Level. IBCAO Version 4.0 has been compiled with support from the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO-Seabed 2030 Project, an international effort whose goal it is to see the entire world ocean mapped by 2030. A geographic version of the Polar Stereographic grid serves as input to the General Bathymetric Chart of Oceans (GEBCO) global gridded terrain model.

Explanation
BODC protocols are based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model enabling BODC to iterate towards compliance with the on-going evolution and development of community requirements including FAIR (Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,Reusable), TRUST (Transparency, Responsibility, User community, Sustainability, Technology) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics). Data managers quality assure submissions and assemble the metadata necessary for curation. Submissions (as received) are placed in a long-term accession and stored in triplicate across multiple sites. Appropriate data are transferred into a standard internal format with source variable names mapped to controlled vocabularies, documentation assembled, and metadata loaded into BODC databases. Access to these data is through direct request, the BODC website and through partner repositories such as SeaDataNet. Access control is attained by assigning a data policy to each set of data and this policy is used to administer access when data are requested. Discovery metadata is aligned with EU INSPIRE (through MEDIN) and SeaDataNet community standards. Data are converted to open community formats including Ocean Data View ASCII and SeaDataNet NetCDF, with data described using terms from the NERC vocabulary server. BODC submission agreements are documented on the BODC website and customer service is assured with a dedicated requests team that serve data following local regulations including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018 and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2004.

Statement

This dataset was generated by organisation with the "originator centre" role in this metadata record following their in-house data processing and quality control procedures. It represents the 4th version of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) and has been generated by the originator on behalf of this project. The data set is in the form of a grid that has been generated from a number of sources and using different data collection techniques. Information concerning the source data sets included in the grid is given in the documentation that accompanies the data set. After generation, the grid was then provided to the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) for delivery via the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) web site (maintained at BODC). The data set is also a regional contribution to the global GEBCO grid that is maintained and made available by BODC (acting as the Global Center for the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project) on behalf of GEBCO.

Instrument(s) used to collect data: single-beam echosounders; multi-beam echosounders.
