Flower species and their abundances on farmland in Hampshire and West Sussex during 2014 and 2018

The dataset contains information about floral abundance on eight farms across Hampshire and West Sussex in 2014 and 2018. Transects of 3km were marked out on each farm and surveyed 3 times in both years. Flower species seen along transects were identified and their estimated abundances recorded.

The work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (Grants NE/P009972/1 and NE/J016802/1).

Report

Dataset Reference Date ()

Statement
The transects were marked through a variety of different environments on each farm. They were separated into distinguishable sections, and then walked and surveyed 2m either side of the surveyor for flowers. The flower species seen were identified and their estimated abundances recorded. Wildflower identification books were used to reach an accurate species-level identification where possible for each flower species seen. A “flower” was counted when fully open, and is defined as either a single flower, flowers on an umbel or spike, or a capitulum. The data recorded in the field was then transferred into an excel spreadsheet.
