Soil greenhouse gas fluxes along transects from oil palm to riparian forests in the SAFE landscape

These data are NERC-funded but not held by the EIDC. These data are archived in the SAFE repository, hosted by Zenodo.

This dataset contains calculated greenhouse gas fluxes and associated parameters from three transects of static chambers that were set up from oil palm into riparian forests in the SAFE landscape in Malaysian Borneo, Sabah. A total of 48 chambers were installed in two transects of 6 x 3 chambers and one transect of 4 x 3 chambers. Soil greenhouse gases (methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide) were measured every two months for one year (Nov 2016 until Nov 2017) resulting in 7 measurement occasions. Other environmental parameters were measured during the time of chamber enclosure as possible explanatory variables for correlation with recorded greenhouse gas fluxes including soil and air temperature, soil moisture, soil mineral N (nitrate (NO3) and ammonium (NH4)). In addition, water samples were taken from the stream and analysed for NO3, NH4, pH, temperature, total dissolved solids, conductivity and greenhouse gases using the headspace method.

Statement
The data were collected using the static chamber method. Gas samples were taken from chambers in the field via syringe and injected into vials for storage and later analysis. Samples were analysed on a gas chromatagraph (GC) in the lab. Concentrations were calculated from GC peak areas, calibrated against standard gases of known concentration. Fluxes were calculated from the concentration change in each chamber by linear regression. Fluxes are expressed as microgrammes per square metre per hour for CH4 and N2O and milligramme per square meter per hour for CO2. River water parameters were measured in situ with a HANNA HI 991301 pH/EC/TDS meter (BDH Chemicals Ltd Poole). To take the headspace samples a luer lock was attached to a 200 ml syringe which was filled with 100 ml of water (10 cm below the water). The luer lock was then closed and the syringe shaken for 1 minute exactly under water. Then the syringe was held upside down so that the air was close to the exit port. Two needles were attached to a gas sample vial (as for the chamber measurements) and the vial flushed with the 100 ml of the headspace, without transferring water into the vial. Samples were analysed using GC as described above for chamber measurements and a concentration calculated.
