UKGEOS Glasgow Soil Chemistry 03_18 dataset
The UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS) Glasgow facility, baseline soil geochemistry dataset released from the BGS comprises an excel file with two spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet contains information on the chemical composition of 90 topsoil (0 - 20 cm) samples collected from seven initially proposed borehole sites for the UKGEOS Glasgow facility, and from two control sites, in February-March 2018 (03-18). Ten samples were collected from each site prior to installation of the UKGEOS Glasgow facility, and underwent laboratory analysis. Chemical data for pH and the total concentrations of 54 inorganic and 75 organic substances in the soil samples are presented. In addition, the dataset contains locational and descriptive information about the samples noted during sampling. The analyte name, element chemical symbols, analytical method, units of measurement and limits of quantification are recorded in header rows at the top of the spreadsheet. The dataset includes qualifiers, highlighting any quality control issues reported with the data. The data qualifiers are explained in the second spreadsheet released with the data. Further details about the dataset can be found in the accompanying report

- Statement
- Each soil sample comprised a composite collected by hand-auger from the corners and centre of a 1 x 1 m square. Samples were freeze-dried, sieved to 2 mm and analysed to determine soil pH (by CaCl2 slurry method), the CrVI content (by speciated isotope dilution mass spectrometry), the carbon content (by carbon analyser), the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content (by Iatroscan) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) content (by gas chromatography mass spectrometry) at the BGS laboratories. The total concentrations of 54 inorganic chemical parameters were determined by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry by Panalytical Ltd. A sub-set of 10 soil samples was screened for the presence of asbestos prior to sample preparation and analysis by hand picking and polarising light microscopy at i2 Analytical Ltd. In addition, the BGS recorded observations about the soil samples during sample collection. Laboratory data underwent quality assurance prior to reporting. Where possible, analytical methods were UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited. The BGS undertook further quality control checking and data conditioning to create the combined laboratory and field observation dataset for release. More information is available in the accompanying metadata report http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/527798/.
