  • The University of Leeds automatic weather station (AWS) data describe meteorological measurements taken by 16 AWSs across the UK on the 6th of June 2005. All data were sampled at 3 second intervals. The dataset contains measurements of wind direction, wind speed, air pressure, surface pressure, and relative humidity.

  • The African Easterly Jet (AEJ) is part of a climatic system which is of critical importance to African and global weather and climate, but is poorly observed and not well represented in model analyses. For the JET2000 project the Met Office Met Research flight (MRF) aircraft performed four flights, involving transects along and across the jet and the baroclinic zone, to make observations of unprecedented resolution for this part of the world. 110 dropsondes were dropped along the fight path. The data includes detailed synoptic observations of the basic state over mainland West Africa, and detailed synoptic observations of the African Easterly Waves (AEW) over mainland tropical West Africa.

  • HYREX (Hydrological Radar Experiment) was a NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) special topic running from May 1993 to April 1997. Field experiments with an emphasis on radar, plus related interpretation and modelling, were carried out to investigate the short term forecasting and hydrological implications of precipitation. A special purpose-built dense rainguage network was established in Somerset as part of the project. Rainguage, radar and related meteorological data plus forecast data from the Met Office Unified Model are available through BADC.

  • Fennec was the NERC consortium project investigating the the role of dust aerosols in the Saharan climate system that ran between 2010-2012. It was lead by the University of Oxford and involved the Universities of Leeds, Reading, Sussex and the UK Met Office. The aim of Fennec was to quantify (through observations) and model the atmospheric boundary layer and aerosol processes over the Saharan 'heat low' region. This dataset collection contains automatic weather station (AWS) data from eight stations installed across the Sahara. Four were installed in remote locations in the central desert where no previous meteorological observations had previously existed.

  • The DIAMET project aimed to better the understanding and prediction of mesoscale structures in synoptic-scale storms. Such structures include fronts, rain bands, secondary cyclones, sting jets etc, and are important because much of the extreme weather we experience (e.g. strong winds, heavy rain) comes from such regions. Weather forecasting models are able to capture some of this activity correctly, but there is much still to learn. By a combination of measurements and modelling, mainly using the Met Office Unified Model (UM), the project worked to better understand how mesoscale processes in cyclones give rise to severe weather and how they can be better represented in models and better forecast. This dataset contains minute resolution meteorological measurements by the Met Office Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) during the DIAMET intensive observation campaigns.

  • This dataset combines daily automated weather station (AWS) from the Climoor field site in Clocaenog forest, North East Wales The data are on relative humidity (percent), air temperature (degrees Celsius), rainfall (millimetres), air pressure (millibars), net radiation (millivolts), solar radiation (Kilowatts per square metre per second), photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), (micromol per square metre per second), wind speed (metres per second) and wind direction (degrees). These data are an extension for the Daily automated weather station dataset (1998-2015) for the time period July 2015 to August 2016. Data were not collected between 9th October 2015 and 3rd November 2015 due to problems with the sensors. Data are recorded in minute intervals. Up to January 2016 the data were averaged hourly, after January 2016 data were averaged half hourly. Data are then to averaged to daily values, which are reported here. Data collection, processing and quality checking was carried out by members of CEH Bangor staff. The Climoor field experiment intends to answer questions regarding the effects of warming and drought on ecosystem processes. The reported data are collected to monitor site specific environmental conditions and their development with time. These data are important to interpret results that are collected from the climate change manipulations imposed in the field. The dataset has been quality checked, and incorrect or missing values removed, data has not been infilled. Data runs from 12/6/1999 until 30/06/2015, no data was collected March 2006 and June 2008. Air temperature, rainfall and wind speed and direction were recorded since June 1999. Measurements of relative humidity, air pressure, net and solar radiation and PAR started in June 2008. Since June 2008, data are recorded in minute intervals, averaged to hourly, then to daily means that are reported here. The Climoor field experiment intends to answer questions regarding the effects of warming and drought on ecosystem processes. The reported data are collected to monitor site specific environmental conditions and their development with time. These data are important to interpret results that are collected from the climate change manipulations imposed in the field.   • Temperature, pressure, wind speed and wind direction from two automatic weather stations on the Brunt Ice Shelf that operated during 2015.
